Cajun Contemporary Louisiana Creole French
This classic Creole bistro, a 2016 and 2017 James Beard finalist, is located one block from beautiful, historic St. Charles Ave. The bright yellow exterior melds together an 1877 townhouse with a 1926 speakeasy. Inside, four dining rooms open one after the other; their walls drenched with local and regional art acquired over the years by proprietress JoAnn Clevenger. Famous home of the “Original Fried Green Tomato with Shrimp Remoulade”, the sublime Oysters St. Claude and Hot and Hot Shrimp, the menu is inspired by classic Creole and Cajun traditions and revels in innovation. An informed, progressive wine list and craft cocktail program reflect the knowledge and aspirations of a dedicated and friendly staff. An apt motto could be “Classic New Orleans with Adventure.”
The original meaning of the word “restaurant” was “to restore” and says JoAnn Clevenger, “Restaurants were originally more than just a place to find a meal; restaurants existed to soothe and bolster the weary soul with comfort and indulgence. Like the earliest restaurants, my goal for Upperline is to be a haven for our guests, restoring their serenity after daily hassles of the world with great Louisiana food, serious wine, and Creole hospitality.” But Upperline is more than just a restaurant, it is a way of life and a strong fixture in the local community.
